Why get travel insurance?
We strongly encourage all our travelers to protect their travel investment by purchasing insurance—even if it's not with Friendly Planet—because we believe it is the safest way to travel and a small price to pay for peace of mind. Even with the most meticulous planning, travel can be full of surprises. Here are just a few unforeseen circumstances:
- A family emergency comes up the day before you're due to depart.
- You get sick just before travelling.
- You booked a domestic connecting flight, but it's delayed, causing you to miss your international flight.
- A severe storm causes your international flight to be grounded, and now you'll miss part of your tour.
- Your bags get lost, misrouted or damaged in transit.
- You get food poisoning or sprain an ankle while on tour.
With our travel insurance policies, you could rest easy knowing that you're covered in these and many other situations.
For your convenience, we've partnered Travelex Insurance Services, one of the most respected names in trip insurance, to offer travelers on our tours & packages two comprehensive, low-cost policies with a wide range of benefits.
Basic Protection Plan: Benefits includes coverage for trip cancellation, interruption or travel delays; medical emergency medical expenses and evacuation; lost or delayed baggage; missed connections; and even connecting flights not purchased through Friendly Planet. See coverage details below.
Basic Protection Plan with Cancel for Any Reason Upgrade: This upgrade includes all the benefits above, plus you can cancel your travel plans for ANY reason not covered by our Basic Protection Plan and get reimbursed 75% of all non-refundable trip costs! See coverage details below.
To get the most of our travel protection plans, we recommend purchasing insurance at the time of booking, which ensures your deposit will be covered and includes a waiver for pre-existing medical conditions. You'll have the option to select a policy during the booking process.
Our Basic Protection Plan with the Cancel for Any Reason Upgrade must be purchased at the time of booking. It cannot be added after your reservation has been completed.
Our Basic Protection Plan may be added to your booking at any time until you make your final payment. It cannot be added after we receive your final payment. To add insurance to an existing booking for a tour or package with Scheduled Dates, select the appropriate option on our Make A Payment Page before or when making your final payment. If you have purchased (or plan to purchase) connecting flights from a vendor other than Friendly Planet, contact us before or when making your final payment and within 7 days of booking these flights so that we can include them in your coverage.
Our plans cost the same for all travelers, regardless of age or trip duration. The cost of coverage is determined only by the total trip cost per person. Total trip cost includes all total travel expenses paid to Friendly Planet, excluding any discounts, plus the cost of any outside travel arrangements not purchased through Friendly Planet. Benefits & Coverage
This is a partial summary of plan benefits. For complete details on benefits, coverage, limitations and exclusions, please refer to the Description of Coverage.
TRIP CANCELLATION & INTERRUPTION: Protect travel investments and recover non-refundable, prepaid trip costs if a trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a covered reason.
TRIP DELAY: Provides reimbursement of up to $1,000 for additional expenses such as accommodations, meals and local transportation, if your trip is delayed 5 hours or more for a covered reason. Trip Delay does not reimburse for expenses incurred after travel becomes possible.
BAGGAGE & BAGGAGE DELAY: Provides reimbursement up to $1,000/$250 (Delay) for personal articles and expenses if bags are lost, stolen, damaged or delayed for 12 hours or more.
CONNECTING FLIGHTS: Reimburses up to the total cost of connecting flights not purchased through Friendly Planet if you cancel these flights for a covered reason. If you plan to book connecting flights, be sure to contact us before or when making your final payment and within 7 days of booking these flights so that we can include them in your coverage.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL: Provides coverage up to $50,000 for emergency medical treatment if a sickness or injury occurs while traveling.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION & REPATRIATION: Provides coverage up to $100,000 for Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation. Covers costs of transportation from the place where you are sick or injured to the nearest medical facility (also includes repatriation).
24-HOUR ACCIDENTAL DEATH & DISMEMBERMENT: Provides coverage up to $50,000 for loss of life, limbs or sight from a covered accidental injury anytime during your travel.
TRAVEL ASSISTANCE & CONCIERGE SERVICES: Includes a wide range of services before and during trips through a 24/7 toll-free number. Includes assistance with medical emergencies, lost documents or baggage, event ticketing, business services, and much more.

Cancel for Any Reason Upgrade
This option allows you to cancel your trip for ANY reason not covered by our Basic Protection Plan and receive 75% reimbursement of all non-refundable payments you have made towards your trip, provided all requirements are met.
Examples of when you could benefit from this enhanced coverage:
- You have a friend or relative expecting a newborn baby close to your departure date
- You're a professional who may have an unexpected work conflict
- You're traveling with a significant other in a new relationship
How it works:
- If you have to cancel your reservation, contact us immediately, at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure. (If you simply don't show up for your tour, you will not be covered.)
- If you are cancelling for a reason normally covered by our Basic Protection Plan, you are eligible for 100% reimbursement of all non-refundable payments up to the maximum benefit, less the cost of the insurance.
- If you are cancelling for any reason NOT covered by our Basic Protection Plan, you are eligible for 75% reimbursement of all non-refundable payments up to the maximum benefit, less the cost of the insurance.
- All other terms and conditions of the policy are exactly the same as the Basic Protection Plan.
Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion Waiver
The pre-existing condition exclusion will be waived at no additional cost provided that you purchase the insurance from us within 14 days of making the initial deposit payment for your trip, and you are not disabled from travel at the time of purchase.
Ten Day Free Look Period
If you are not completely satisfied with your coverage, contact us within 10 days of purchasing and we will refund your premium, provided you have not departed on your trip or filed a claim. After 10 days, all insurance purchases are non-refundable.
