A few months ago, Peggy Goldman and Ilan Fink, owners of Friendly Planet, returned from Cuba, which they have been visiting regularly since 2011, the year they received their first license for legal travel from the USA. They went to see, firsthand, how the Island had weathered Covid and to savor once again the pleasures unique to Cuba. And they were not disappointed, because Cuba always delights. Music everywhere

There is no way to escape the music in Cuba. It is everywhere, and it is wonderful. You'll find impromptu rehearsals in the shade of a plaza; regulars at a Casa de Música experimenting with new harmonies; and the ubiquitous musicians performing wherever you stop for a meal.

Incredibly Resourceful

No fertilizer for food crops? No problem! Cubans have made organic farming an art form. On most visits to the island, you’ll tour an “organopónico” to learn about small farms, often nestled between apartment buildings. The harvests, critically-needed veggies and herbs, are then sold through neighborhood farmers’ markets.

Hemingway lives on

You can’t miss a visit to Finca Vigia, Hemingway’s Cuban home. While the interior is closed to visitors, the ample open windows allow you to peer into the house and get plenty of pictures. In Havana, you’ll be lucky to run into a modern day Hemingway who will gladly pose for a picture (and perhaps a small reward, too).
