In the north of the city, explore the splendid Basilica of San Nicola, the nearly 1,000 year-old Cathedral of San Sabino, and the Swabian castle. Murattiano, the modern heart of the city, offers a stunning seaside promenade and a major shopping district. Other sites of interest include the Archaeological Museum and the Provincial Art Gallery. Visit these sites on your own or choose from several optional excursions, including a pleasant city tour by bicycle. Before boarding the ship, be sure to sample some of Bari's exquisite wines including Primitivo, the Castel del Monte, and Trani Muscat. Breakfast, lunch & dinner provided.
Day 4: Olympia & Katakolon, Greece. Disembark this morning at the small port town of Katakolon. Visit nearby Olympia, where you'll wonder at the ruins of the awesome Temple of Zeus and explore the birthplace of the Olympic Games. These games were the most important international event in the Hellenic world from 776 B.C. to 393 A.D. and continue today, with the lighting of the Olympic flame that is carried by runners throughout the world. Visit the Sanctuary of the Olympian Zeus and the Archeological Museum on your own or join an optional excursion. Breakfast, lunch & dinner provided.
Day 5: Santorini and Mykonos, Greece. Arrive early this morning at Santorini. This striking island, with breathtaking panoramas and rugged landscapes, is actually a volcanic crater slightly immersed in the sea. The island is famous for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques which cling to steep cliffs, accessible by foot, cable car or mule. Explore the island on your own or choose from several optional shore excursions that take you to some of Santorini's most picturesque sites. Among other sites, visit the Museum in Fira town and a typical winery, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy three of the island's most famous wines, served with delicious cheese.
Return to the ship to continue sailing to Mykonos. Arrive at Mykonos later this afternoon, where chic crowds flock to the island's trendy restaurants, discos, and clubs each night, and where you can sit seaside, sipping ouzo and watching the sunset while listening to traditional Greek music. Before heading back to the ship, enjoy a stroll through Mykonos town with its labyrinth of winding alleyways and whitewashed buildings, basket-laden donkeys, cascading geraniums and upscale shops and cafes. Please note that in November, arrival at Mykonos (about 6:00 pm) is after sunset. Breakfast, lunch & dinner provided.
Day 6: Rhodes, Greece. Today you'll visit Rhodes, the beautiful "Island of Roses." In the heart of the island's biggest city, also named Rhodes, is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, a fascinating web of Byzantine, Turkish and Latin ruins. Its mighty fortifications provide the finest surviving examples of defensive architecture of the time. Lindos, with its whitewashed houses clustered beneath a soaring castle-capped acropolis, is Rhodes' most picturesque village and most important Doric settlement because of its natural harbor and vantage point built 125 meters above sea level. I am here to sing Friendly Planet's praises! Last year, I was booked on a tour that included a cruise and four days on land in Greece. The flight was canceled due to torrential rains that caused a delay in the trip. All during that weekend, there was someone that could be contacted throughout what appeared to be a disaster. Our contact person was Harry who tirelessly worked to get us booked on another flight. All of the people were there to assist; in spite of everything, the trip was excellent! The tour company in Greece was excellent as well. Even after the trip was over, the staff was always there to answer questions and to assist. Kudos to Friendly Planet - I highly recommend their services.
