Construction of the Great Wall, which spanned more than two thousand years, began between the 7th and 6th century BC and continued through the Ming Dynasty. The wall was originally built of stone, wood, grass and earth, but during the Ming Dynasty, bricks were produced in kilns set up along the wall. In ancient China, the Emperor of China was regarded as the "Son of Heaven", who administered earthly matters on behalf of, and representing, heavenly authority. To be seen showing respect to the source of his authority, in the form of sacrifices to heaven, was extremely important. The temple was built for these ceremonies, and each winter solstice the emperor and his entourage would move through the city to encamp within the complex, wearing special robes and abstaining from eating meat while personally praying to heaven for good harvests. The symbolic layout and design of the Temple of Heaven had a profound influence on architecture and planning in the Far East. More than 8,000 life-size ceramic soldiers, chariots and horses have been uncovered - only a fraction of the total buried there to protect the tomb of the first Qin emperor. Each soldier is based on an actual person of the time, and all segments of Chinese society are represented. Other stops on today's tour include the Shaanxi Provincial Museum and City Wall. The hotel was over-the-top fabulous. I learned so much about the history and culture during this tour from very well-informed guides, who so obviously love their country and loved sharing their knowledge with us. I LOVED SHANGHAI. Loved our guide Alan - so well informed - so much fun. He had us in stitches the whole time. Tours were great - Silk factory REALLY caused me to willingly leave money in China! It was fascinating to learn the process from moth to finished product. In Hangzhou, I took my first ever bullet train ride. And first ever gondola ride too, West Lake and the gardens on the shore are really beautiful. Jinshan Museum was very well presented. I loved that the museum was built right on top of the dig site and we could actually see the work in progress. They had an excellent display of recovered artifacts. The Giant Panda Research Center was FANTASTIC. My prior travel has been on cruises or self-guided tours. Never again. Friendly Planet has me totally convinced that the best way to experience the sights and sounds and tastes and culture of a country/region is to LIVE it - not just walk around a port or jump on a bus to do activities that can be done at home.
