Thailand

Incense mingles with aromatic foods as your tuk-tuk zips through Bangkok's narrow streets lined with Buddha statues for sale. Chants drift from Buddhist temples and the chatter of locals fishing from the Chao Phraya River. Meditate on the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, or see the infamous bridge over the River Kwai. Our discount tours of Thailand include everything you need for the trip of a lifetime!

Entry requirements

U.S. citizens must have a passport which is valid for at least six months after your arrival date.

U.S. passport holders do not need a visa to enter Thailand for tourist stays up to 30 days. Otherwise, a visa is required prior to arrival, which can be obtained from a Thai Embassy or consulate or a fee-based visa service, such as our preferred provider, VisaHQ. See the U.S. Dept. of State website for more information.

Booked on one of our packages with Scheduled Dates? If you do not hold a U.S. passport, you are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas and meeting all entry requirements. If a visa is required, we recommend using a fee-based visa service, such as our preferred provider, VisaHQ.

Shopping

Thailand is famous for its silk (silk from Jim Thompson is good quality). Shop also for lacquerware, painted umbrellas, bronze, silver, temple bells, celadon pottery, tribal weavings, custom-made shoes, opium weights and pillows, and carved water buffalo bells. Beware of copycat items in Thailand from clothes to watches. Some 24 carat gold is also somewhat less than 100% pure, but crafted well.

Health Precautions & Vaccinations

Malaria is not present in major cities. Although not required, typhoid, tetanus and hepatitis vaccinations should be considered if you're going to remote areas. If you get nipped by a dog, even in Bangkok, get checked for rabies. Skin infections are common—even the smallest wound should be disinfected and covered with a bandage.

Power & Adapters

220 volts. Plugs A & C. You will need a voltage converter and plug adapter in order to use U.S. appliances. We recommend getting a universal adapter and converter kit. View more information about electrical standards around the world.

Tipping

Tipping is not a common practice. Round up taxi fare to the next 5 or 10 baht. Hotels and restaurants have service charges included in the bill.

Rave Reviews

At the price, I thought we would fly on the outside of the airplane, and get around Thailand by goat cart. Instead, China Air was a new plane, we got around by a new bus, in the best hotels in town, and had a guide who was an absolute joy. I could not recommend the trip more highly. We took the extension to Angkor Wat, which was marvelous. Only problem was the 23 hour ride getting home, but short of having one's own jet, that is life for the traveler

Treasures of Thailand & Angkor Wat

What a wonderful time we had on the Treasures of Thailand tour. I celebrated my birthday on the tour and our guide Tajma had a cake locally baked to celebrate the occasion - delicious coconut cake! We will definitely travel with Friendly Planet again! Thank you for making it all seem so seamless and convenient!
