Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Depart USA. Your journey to Morocco begins this evening as you depart New York on your overnight flight to Casablanca.

Day 2: Casablanca & Rabat. Arrival in Casablanca, the largest city and main port of Morocco. Meet your guide who will assist you with customs formalities.

Travel by motor coach to Rabat, capital of Morocco since 1912. Visit the impressive 12th century Tower of Hassan and the adjacent royal mausoleum containing the remains of King Mohammed V and King Hassan II.Take a walk through the medina and visit the Oudaias Casbah with its hilltop ocean views.

If time permits, enjoy a cup of mint tea at the outdoor cafe in the casbah. Later, check in to your 5-star hotel and join your fellow travelers at a welcome dinner. Hotel Golden Tulip Farah (D)

Day 3: Rabat, Volubilis, Meknes & Fez. After breakfast, set out for Fez, widely considered the architectural highlight of Morocco. En route, stop at Volubilis to visit the ancient Roman ruins, which stretch out over 40 hectares and are the most well preserved ruins in Morocco.

En route, pass by the village where the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II is located.

Continue to nearby Meknes, an imperial city surrounded by more than two kilometers of ramparts and six entry gates. Founded in the 11th century, Meknes was chosen by Moulay Ismaïl in 1672 as capital of his empire. Explore some of the fantastic monuments such as Bab El Mansour and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and enjoy the impressive views from Meknes of the Agdal basin.

Continue on to Fez. Fez Ramada (B,D)

Day 4: Fez. Enjoy a day of sightseeing in Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest city in Morocco. Its walled medina is one of the most intact and impressive medieval cities in the Arab world, and the contrast between the old city and the French-planned new city makes sightseeing all the more fascinating. You truly feel as if you're stepping into the past when you walk through one of the gates to the old medina.

The medina is divided into two sections: Fez el-Bali, the older, larger section; and Fez el-Jedid, the newer, smaller section. Your tour includes the Kairouine Mosque and University, at the center of the medina. Visit the Gate of Bab Boujloud, the main Gate of the Royal Palace and the Jewish Quarter.

This evening, your dinner is included at your hotel or you may wish to take advantage of an optional Moroccan dinner and show in the old city. ($48) (B,D)

Day 5: Fez & Marrakesh. Today you'll travel from Fez to Marrakesh via the Atlas Mountains and through the alpine town of Ifrane, where the European architecture, rather than traditional Moroccan style, can be seen everywhere. You'll also pass through Beni Mellal, a growing town of nearly 60,000 where bustling markets and a busy night life are a magnet for foreign tourists and Moroccans alike.

Experience the beautiful panoramas of the mountains and the Moroccan countryside as you drive to Marrakesh, the most popular of Morocco's imperial cities and a must-see of any tour to Morocco.

Tonight, you can choose to have dinner at your hotel or join an optional Marrakesh-by-Night tour. The tour begins with a horse drawn carriage ride to the medina (old town) where you'll enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner in a splendid old palace. Entertainment, including belly dancing, is included as well. ($72) Mansour Eddahbi (B,D)

Day 6: Marrakesh. Marrakesh enjoys a stunning setting surrounded by the snow-peaked Atlas Mountains in the background. Much of the medina is surrounded by beautifully restored ramparts, and lovely palm gardens sit among the impressive buildings.

Your tour takes you to the Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh's main square. This amazing market seems straight out of Hollywood, with peddlers, musicians, dancers, acrobats, magicians, snake charmers, and storytellers galore. Narrow side streets lead into the the medina, the old city.

Continue your tour to the Koutoubia Minaret. Considered a jewel of Islamic architecture, the minaret rises 230 feet and is visible from 18 miles. The mosque has a large plaza, walkways, and gardens as well as floodlights to illuminate its curved windows, a band of ceramic inlay, pointed merlons (ornamental edgings), and various decorative arches. (Entry into the mosque itself is not permitted for non-Muslims.)

Also on the the agenda are visits to the Bahia Palace, and the ornately decorated Saadian Dynasty tombs (B,D)

Day 7: Marrakesh. Full day at leisure to explore the largest traditional souk (market) in Morocco or you can choose an optional half day tour of the Ourika Valley.

Travel through the High Atlas mountains while viewing a beautiful valley and tiny villages along the Ourika River. The Ourika Valley features the Djebel Yagour prehistoric rock carvings and the Ighreb Mosque. During a rest stop, enjoy tea with a Moroccan family. ($40) (B,D)

Day 8: Marrakesh & Casablanca. Transfer back to Casablanca this morning. You'll enjoy a city tour starting at the Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca's most impressive landmark. Completed in 1993, the Hassan II is the third largest mosque in the world, with capacity for 25,000 people inside. It is also one of only a few that non-Muslims can enter. Built on land reclaimed from the Atlantic, almost half of its surface lies over the sea, which can be seen through a gigantic glass floor. At night, lasers shine from the top of the minaret, the world's tallest, toward Mecca.

Continue to the heart of the city to Mohammed V Square, which links the old town and new town together. Surrounding the gardened square are splendid examples of the design style known as Mooresque, which combines both Moroccan and French architectural elements.

Later, check in to your hotel and join your fellow travelers at a farewell dinner. Hotel Suisse Casablanca (B,D)

Day 9: Departure. In the early morning shortly after midnight, you'll be escorted to the airport as you bid farewell to Morocco and board your return flight. Your fascinating journey comes to an end as you arrive in the USA later today.
