Day 1: Depart USA. Your exciting Mediterranean journey begins this evening as you check-in for your overnight jet flight bound for Barcelona.
Day 2: Barcelona, Spain. Early afternoon arrival in Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain. After customs formalities, you'll be escorted to Port de Barcelona to board the MSC Fantasia and begin your weeklong Mediterranean cruise. (D)
Day 3: Marseilles, France. Arrive this morning in Marseilles, whose history dates back to 600 B.C. when it was founded by the ancient Greeks. Since then, it has grown to become the second largest city in France and its largest commercial port. Enjoy many fascinating sites including: the Old Port, the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde, the Phare de Sainte Marie lighthouse, the Centre Bourse and the adjacent rue St Ferreol district (the main shopping district in central Marseilles) or take a ride along the Kennedy Corniche, a coastal road with excellent views across the Bay of Marseilles. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Savona (Genoa), Italy. With origins dating back to the middle of the Bronze Age, Savona's ancient structures and winding streets are an area rich in culture, just minutes from the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. Explore on your own, or join an optional shore excursion to Genoa, Liguria's capital and ancient Maritime Republic.
Another exciting excursion takes you to the luxurious Italian Riviera town of Portofino. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Naples, Italy. This afternoon, arrive in Campania, the capital city of Naples. Join an optional tour of historic Naples. Or, join other exciting optional excursions to the legendary sites of Pompeii and Vesuvius. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Palermo, Sicily. This morning, arrive at the Sicilian port city of Palermo, once regarded as Europe's grandest, most beautiful city. We recommend a visit to the Four Corners of Palermo, where statues adorn elegant 17th century Spanish Baroque facades. See the Fontana Pretoria, often called the Fountain of Shame because of its nude Florentine figures, and the famous Norman Cathedral and Capuchin catacombs, among other sites. (B,L,D)
Day 7: La Goulette (Tunis), Tunisia. Morning arrival in Tunis, Tunisia, where whitewashed, blue-shuttered buildings hide a treasure trove of Ottoman art. Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, actually consists of three cities: the modern Capital City of the Tunisian Republic, with its wide streets, skyscrapers and busy sidewalk cafes; the Arabic Medina (Old Town) from the Middle Ages, an exciting labyrinth laden with secrets, narrow alleyways, small shops, and huge mosques and palaces; and Carthage, the ancient Phoenician-Roman city that lies just outside the main city. (B,L,D)
Day 8: Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Arrive today at the sun-splashed port of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in the Balearic Islands. For millennia, many have found their private paradise in this lovely vacation island off Spain's coast. Wander on your own to Palma's Grand Cathedral, harbor and lovely Old Town. (B,L,D)
Day 9: Barcelona. Arrive in Barcelona this morning. After breakfast, disembark from your cruise, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a full day to explore Spain's most flamboyant and sophisticated city, and home to the 1992 Olympics. Visit the Barrio Gotico (old quarter), a 14th century maze of tiny houses, stately palaces and intriguing shops. See the famous palm tree-lined Plaça Real, hub of Barcelona nightlife.
Visit a lively Ramblas café where Catalan voices accompany dancers swaying to the Sardana, or witness the impassioned foot-stamping Flamenco.
Marvel at one of the greatest architectural achievements of the 20th century, Antoni Gaudí's lavishly extravagant Cathedral of Sagrada Família. This magnificent architectural creation began in 1882 and still under construction today. Ascend its towers, adorned with giant colorful fruit and constructed of such a thin lattice of stone that they seem to defy gravity, for some of the best views of the city. (B)
Day 10: Barcelona/USA. Your memorable Mediterranean journey ends as you transfer to the airport for your return flight to the USA. Arrive in the USA later today. Or, continue your stay in Barcelona by adding a late return and extra nights to your package. (B)
